Learn Hindi Through English – Lesson 1 – Introduction

This first lesson gives complete beginners a strong foundation in basic Hindi grammar, pronunciation, and sentence structure. Through simple examples, English comparisons, and small speaking tasks, you’ll quickly gain confidence forming sentences like “Main Ranit hoon” or “Main khush hoon.”

In the first lesson,

You start with the most basic building blocks of Hindi sentences:

  • मैं (Me) → “I”

  • हूँ (Hoon) → “am”

  • एक (Ek) → “a / an / one”

  • और (Aur) → “and”

You’ll also learn that Hindi sentence structure follows the Subject – Object – Verb pattern, unlike English (Subject – Verb – Object).
So, “I am Ranit” becomes “Main Ranit hoon.”

🗣 Sample Sentences

  • I am Ranit → Main Ranit hoon

  • I am John → Main John hoon

  • I am Shila → Main Shila hoon

  • I am happy → Main khush hoon

  • I am sad → Main dukhi hoon

  • I am excited → Main excited hoon (you can use English words until you learn more Hindi vocabulary)

  • I am here → Main yahan hoon

  • I am there → Main wahan hoon

  • I am a boy → Main ek ladka hoon (often spoken as Main ladka hoon)

  • I am a girl → Main ek ladki hoon (or Main ladki hoon)

  • I am a teacher → Main shikshak hoon

  • I am an engineer → Main engineer hoon

  • I am an Indian → Main Bharatiya hoon

  • I am an American → Main American hoon

You’ll notice that in Hindi, the word “am” (hoon) must always be used, but “a / an (ek)” can often be dropped in natural conversation.

🔗 Connecting Ideas

To join two sentences, you use और (Aur) which means “and.”
For example:

I am Manjunath and I am a teacher → Main Manjunath hoon aur main shikshak hoon.

🧠 Practice Exercise

At the end of the lesson, you’re encouraged to translate a few sentences into Hindi about yourself — your name, profession, feelings, and nationality — and post them in the comments. You’re also invited to share why you’re learning Hindi, so the instructor can get to know you better.
