Kids never think what is good for them and what isn’t… hence they do everything that makes them happy, and sometimes they indulge in activities out of curiosity. Many of the activities that kids indulge in are potentially harmful to them and being parents or elder siblings it’s your duty to keep a close look on what your kid or younger sibling is up to and make corrections if necessary. Kids climb on unstable structures, sticking their fingers in between the blades of a fan, tasting glues, pouring paint all over their body or placing their hand on a hot pan and so on.
While we have no problems in identifying that these activities are not good for the child and we are quick enough to explain the same to the kid, many of us are unaware of the fact that sitting in a particular position is dangerous for the child. Hence, we do not reprimand the kid and let him/her sit in the same position as long as the kid wishes to. If you start thinking that the child has finally stopped creating chaos and hence relax a little bit, it might be harmful to your child. Hence, it is important that you do not take things for granted and keep a close look on the kid even while it is sitting down.
You might be wondering as to why are we raising concern and asking you to be vigilant, we are asking you to keep a close watch, because, experts have come out conclusive evidence which shows that some of the sitting position is not good for your kid at all. Researchers have found that there’s one particular sitting position which common among the kids and probably you also might have sat in the same position when you were a kid. Hence you might feel that sitting in the same position will not cause any problem to you kid, but you are wrong.
Therapists say that sitting in W position, where the kid puts his/her feet back and knees front, may cause the problem to the kid in the future. Though this position is one of the most comfortable positions to sit for the kid, and hence they like to sit in the position, this position isn’t good for the child at all. Though the W position provides the kid with a wider base to support their body weight, it is found to weaken the core of the child and also cause muscle tightness.
Experts are of the opinion that sitting too often in this position may also lead to neurological issues in the future. The kid may also face problems with dexterity, core strength, muscle tonality, and other such risk, if you let the kid sit in the W position quite too often.
You might be thinking that your kid has already developed a habit of sitting in the position and the children usually don’t listen to elders, especially when you ask them not to do something, how will you tackle the situation? Well, this is not a situation where you should keep thinking how to approach your kid, rather take the challenge head on and make your child quit the habit, as it will have a direct impact on your child’s health in the future.
Make your kid straighten his feet, and force him/her to engage the core while sitting down. You might feel we are asking you to do things that you wouldn’t do otherwise but please do remember that we are asking you to act tough because it has a long-term impact on your kid’s health. You really have no choice but to toughen up and ensure that you instill discipline in your child, especially with regards to his/her sitting habits.
Whenever you observe your kid sitting in the W position, ask him/her to sit back in normal position and repeat the same as many times as possible. By asking you to toughen up, we are not asking you to lose your temper, as it will not serve any cause. What you have to do is not only act tough but also know where to draw a line. Remember that if you let the kid sit in the W position because he/she feels comfortable in the position, you are making the kid face trouble in future.
Also, if you observe any kid in your family or the neighborhood sit in the W position do take some time out to explain to the kid’s parent the problems their kid will have to face by sitting in that position. You can also share the link of this post with them as it will make them aware of the negative consequences of sitting in the W position.
