This world is a beautiful place because each part of the world follows its own traditions. The cultures followed by countries differ from one another. The type of clothes, the type of food and many other basic necessities of human life are more or less defined the culture and tradition followed in a particular country. While the existence of many of them can be explained scientifically, there are many which cannot be explained. Yes, there are some of the weirdest traditions and cultures followed in different parts of the world that are unexplainable, and the same traditions are followed since ages.

One such weird tradition is followed when the girl comes to the age of puberty. Most of us have followed or have come across traditions which are followed in our neighborhood or the country when the girl has her first periods. Weird traditions which cannot be given logical reasoning is followed in most countries of the world when the girl comes to the age of her periods. While having a ‘first period’ scientifically means that a girl has attained puberty, there are countries which follow traditional practices to deal with the girl’s first period. What’s more surprising is that each country has its own set of traditions which are as weird as or weirder than the other.
In Malaysia, as soon as a girl gets her ‘the first period’ she is made to eat a raw egg with some kind of oil poured in it.
A girl getting her ‘first period’ in the Middle East is isolated from the family and is made to stay in a room where no one is supposed to touch her. The girl is given a separate set of utensils and has to eat food without spices except for Though she is isolated, the whole family and relatives come to meet the girl.
In the Philippines, the mother of the girl who goes through her ‘first period’ soaks the girl’s blood-stained underwear in water and smears the water all over the girl’s face. Locals say that the tradition is followed by the belief that the act prevents the girl from having pimples in the future.
The family of the girl who gets her ‘the first period’ in South Africa throws a big party to the relatives and friends. The relatives and friends who attend the party also bring gifts to the girl. The girl is not allowed to go outside of the house for three days and is strictly advised to stay away from male friends and relatives during the time.
Ghana Girl is made to eat a boiled egg which she has to swallow at once. The girl is not allowed to bite the hard boiled egg as the tradition says that doing so means killing your own.
When an Italian girl gets her first period, she must be addressed as ‘signorina’ which means ‘miss’ or ‘young lady’. Family and relatives make sure that everyone who knows the girl is given the good news of her first period. So, it’s normal for the girls to feel flushed when people congratulate them in quick succession.
A strange tradition is followed in Turkey when the girl attains puberty. The girl is slapped in Turkey when she gets her ‘first periods.’ It is said that she is slapped so that her cheeks appear red and she has a sense of shame throughout her life. When a girl reaches puberty, her mother makes a traditional dish called sekihan, which a meal comprising of sticky rice and red beans. It’s mandatory for the entire family to consume the dish and guess that the girl has finally got her first period.
In south India a huge celebration is organised when a girl reaches puberty. In the Tamil community, at first the girl is bathed by her close family and fed a nutritious diet but in isolation. After that, she takes another bath, dresses up in the finest attire, and is showered with blessings and gifts. Relatives are invited, priests perform rituals, and delicious meals are prepared to mark the occasion.
