We use future subjunctive sentences in Hindi to express condition, purpose, wish, expectation, doubt, and guess. We also use this sentence structure to give an order, permission, or advice. This is a form of sentence which represents the action as a wish, hope, or possibility.
Forming the sentence is simple if you are thorough with Lesson 28.
To construct a future subjunctive sentence, form a simple future tense sentence and then drop the last letter of the verb.
Example: God will keep you happy – भगवान आपको खुश रखेगा – Bhagavaan aapako khush rakhega – Simple future tense sentence.
Now, to bring this into a future subjunctive form, drop the last letter from the verb.
May God keep you happy! – भगवान आपको खुश रखे – Bhagavaan aapako khush rakhe – Future subjunctive.
In the sentence above, we removed the last letter गा gaa from रखेगा rakhegaa to get रखे rakhe. When we did that, the meaning of the sentence changed to “May God keep you happy!”. This would be a wish or a hope.
It will rain tonight – आज रात को पानी बरसेगा – Aaj raat ko paanee barsegaa
It may rain tonight – आज रात को पानी बरसे – Aaj raat ko paanee barse (possibility)
Will I come in? – क्या मैं अंदर आऊँगा? – Kya main andar aaoonga?
Shall I come in? – क्या मैं अंदर आऊँ? – Kya main andar aaoon? (permission)
To express purpose, the future subjunctive is preceded by कि kee, ताकि taakee, जिससे jis-se.
Don’t eat junk food so that you stay healthy – अस्वास्थ्यकर खाना न खाओ कि (ताकि) तुम तंदरुस्त रहो – Asvaasthyakar khaana na khaao ki (taaki) tum tandarust raho (purpose).
